Almonds are popular tree nuts that are loaded with nutrients that prevent cancer, strengthen bones, promote heart health, and regulate weight. However, almonds may not be good for everyone as if you eat in excess they can lead to painful kidney stones – a condition that causes deposits of minerals and salts that form inside your kidney and cause discomfort. Read on to know how many of the nuts you must eat daily to prevent the condition.
Almonds are among the most popular tree nuts in the world. Being loaded with antioxidants, vitamin E, protein, and fibre, almonds have various health benefits, including supporting heart health and reducing blood pressure levels. They are also rich in healthy fats and minerals.
Almonds are also known to lower blood pressure and the risk of heart disease and cancer risk while decreasing insulin resistance.
However, many people eat a lot of almonds in the name of taking care of their health, without even realizing the side effects. According to experts, these nuts can cause kidney stones – clusters of crystals that form from minerals and other substances in your urinary tract.
According to experts, while most stones pass out of your body in your pee on their own, they can be very painful as they move through and you may need a procedure to break up or remove the stone if it is not able to pass on its own or is causing a blockage.
Why do almonds cause kidney stones?
Doctors say almonds are loaded with oxalates – naturally occurring compounds that bind to calcium and form kidney stones. Your body would absorb oxalates from nuts better than other food sources.
“Excess consumption can lead to the formation of oxalate stones in the kidney especially in those people predisposed to hyperoxaluria when you have too many oxalates in your urine,” Dr. Srinivasa Prasad MD, Senior Consultant, Nephrology, MGM Healthcare, told Times Now.
How many almonds should you consume?
According to experts, eating 20-23 almonds per day for adults is the ideal quantity that can help you be away from painful and discomforting stones. People who are prone to kidney problems or have a history of kidney stones should be especially careful to eat almonds in moderation.
“Consumption of almonds should be in moderation, along with a low oxalate diet & diets rich in calcium. Soaking almonds in water overnight will reduce the oxalate content. Also, the commercially available almond milk is low in oxalate,” said Dr. Prasad. “Also, drinking at least 2.5 liters per day of water and a low salt diet are good healthy dietary options without the risk of developing oxalate stones,” he added.
